Pyrography
The term Pyrography literally means “writing with fire”, from the Greek pur (fire) and graphos (writing) which dates from the 17th century.
Pyrography or pyrogravre is the art of burning images on to a variety of materials such as wood, paper, leather and gourds. Originally, the marks would have been made with heated sticks but nowadays tools have become more advanced with dedicated pyrography machines and soldering iron types. A large range of tones and shades can be achieved by varying the type of tip used, the temperature, or the way the iron is applied to the material. This can create many different effects.
